From Intern to HR Specialist: Building my Hilti Career

As a former intern who joined Hilti full-time after graduation, I’m sharing my perspective on the internship program, my transition into a full-time position, and my career progression so far.

Tell us about your internship experience. 

I am beyond grateful for my internship experience at Hilti. The amount of effort and planning that went into the program was incredible. The intern orientation week hosted by the University Relations team was packed with excellent trainings to prepare us for our roles, connected us with colleagues, and was FUN at the same time! The work we were given over the summer had a clear purpose, added value to the business and allowed us to form relationships with all the other interns across North America. It was truly an experience I will never forget.

What was the turning point where you knew you ‘had to have the job’ at Hilti?

Hilti first captured my attention while I was conducting my initial research on the company. Online, I noticed the amount of effort and genuine insights into the company’s culture and values and at that point I knew this was a company to consider working for. Following my first interview, I knew the role would offer a challenge that I could not resist for my own personal development. When I learned about the culture and the variety of opportunities available with the company, I knew this was where I needed to be. Now, as a full-time employee I think back to my initial findings about Hilti and can confirm that they really do care about their people and values. 

How have you developed within your career so far?

Prior to Hilti, the only HR experience I had was my education. I learn best through application so the majority of my knowledge in the HR field today is thanks to the development that Hilti has offered me. I started as an HR Intern where I was given a variety of projects that exposed me to every aspect of HR you could imagine. In such a short time, I was given the opportunity to host meetings, complete projects and take on responsibilities of my own. I always feel that my opinions and efforts are valued which has helped me to feel comfortable speaking up and challenging ideas. The projects and opportunities that were presented to me in my short time here have increased my confidence in my abilities and challenged me. Since my internship, I have moved on to an HR Specialist role where I continue to develop my skills every day.

What is your favorite part of your role?

My favorite part of my role is that I get to interact with our people daily. I have had the pleasure of forming relationships with colleagues all over North America and I truly believe Hilti has some of the best employees around. I feel confident that I can turn to anyone for support as we are one big team. 

What’s a myth about your job that you’d like to bust? Or about working at Hilti?

I think a lot of people may tend to shy away from the opportunity to work at Hilti because they fear they lack experience in the industry. I realized very quickly that lacking experience in this industry is not an issue. Hilti has the tools and programs to set you up for success no matter what role you are in. They put a lot of effort into development to ensure you feel comfortable in your role as they welcome and celebrate a variety of backgrounds.
